How Nasal Airway Narrowing Affects Breathing
Nasal airway obstruction can occur when internal nasal structures narrow the airflow passage. In some individuals, the nasal valve area — the narrowest portion of the airway — may contribute to breathing difficulty even without major septal deviation.
When airflow is restricted, patients may experience chronic congestion, mouth breathing, snoring, and reduced exercise tolerance.
If structural narrowing is contributing to symptoms, targeted remodeling of the nasal airway may be considered.

What Is Vivaer & How It Works
Vivaer is a minimally invasive treatment that uses controlled radiofrequency energy to reshape internal nasal tissue contributing to airway narrowing.
The procedure:
- Targets areas of internal nasal narrowing
- Uses temperature-controlled radiofrequency energy
- Is typically performed in-office when appropriate
- Requires local anesthesia
- Does not involve cutting or removing tissue
- Does not alter the external appearance of the nose
By gently remodeling tissue inside the nasal airway, Vivaer aims to improve airflow and breathing comfort.

Who May Be Considered & What to Expect
Vivaer may be considered for individuals who experience:
- Chronic nasal obstruction
- Difficulty breathing through the nose
- Nasal valve narrowing
- Snoring related to restricted airflow
- Limited improvement with nasal sprays
- Structural narrowing without major septal deviation
What to expect:
- In-office procedure
- Local anesthesia for comfort
- Minimal downtime
- Gradual improvement as tissue remodeling occurs
- Follow-up to monitor airflow improvement
Recommendations are based on structural assessment and symptom severity.
Comprehensive Evaluation Before Treatment
Effective nasal airway remodeling begins with confirming internal valve narrowing as the primary cause of obstruction.
Airflow Pattern Assessment
Breathing patterns are evaluated to determine areas of resistance within the nasal airway.
Structural Examination
Endoscopic evaluation helps identify narrowing at the nasal valve or other internal structures.
Differentiation From Septal Deviation
Assessment ensures that symptoms are not primarily caused by significant septal deviation requiring surgical correction.
Individualized Treatment Planning
Vivaer is considered when internal narrowing is contributing to airflow restriction without need for traditional surgery.
A structured evaluation ensures treatment is matched to the correct anatomical cause of obstruction.
Patient Stories
Real Results, Real Relief
Patients treated with nasal airway remodeling often report improved breathing comfort and reduced nasal obstruction.
GOOD Based on 132 reviews Posted on Google Michelle GoldmanTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I had the sinus balloonoplasty surgery seven months ago. I have not had one sick day since I have not had a sniffle since. It was 25 minutes long . Recovery was a joke. It is the easiest surgery in the world. Dr. Mandel is amazing. And I'm extremely healthy now. I just sent a friend to Dr. Mandel to get the same surgery done. He might have saved my life. I was sick for over two years with sinus infection infections and bronchitis.Posted on Google Joe D'AlesandroTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I got sinus surgery with Dr. Mandel a little under 2 years ago and it's been good so far. He definitely saved me. I had chronic sinusitis for 7 months with acute bouts before then for years. only when I would get sick, since I turned 20. Antibiotics and steroids were needed to get the snot out and stop producing more post-nasal drip. Finally medication stopped working in August 2023 when I got a flu, and several bouts of antibiotics and steroids didn't do anything. Beginning of March 2024 Dr. Mandel opened all 6 sinuses and did turbinate reduction. I like how this place did CT scans. Every other ENT is apparently just guessing, evidence by the fact 4 days before one of my appointments here another ENT in the area (2nd opinion) told me "he didn't see any sinusitis," then here they did a CT and saw it in 4 sinuses. Had surgery 4 weeks later here. The other ENT told me they are "aggressive" in this practice. He had a strong opinion of Mandel in fact. Yeah, in my view he actually wants to try and fix the problem and not have you come back. Haven't had a steroid/antibiotic pill since I had the surgery, every time I get sick now it feels different in there. Sometimes I still get sinusitis after a cold/flu but it just drains naturally within a day or two. I'd do it again if I had to. They sent me to a good allergist after too in order to monitor me. My default state is different with more mucus than before but according to him that's likely scarring from the multi-month episode I had.Posted on Google Eddie BasultoTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
